Although the White House has characterized the Fiscal Year 2005 budget as a plan to make America “more secure, more prosperous, and more hopeful”, the lack of investment in the education of our nation’s young children puts the administration’s commitment to those goals—as well as to their goal of high academic achievement for all children— in grave doubt.

Bachelor's Degrees are Best: Higher Educations for Pre-Kindergarten Teachers Lead to Better Learning Environments for Children (PDF)
written by Marcy Whitebook, Ph.d
Throughout the United States, kindergartens receive children with increasingly diverse levels of skills. Strong pre-kindergarten programs can guarantee every child is well prepared for kindergarten. While many factors determine the quality of a pre-kindergarten program, none is as important as the quality of the teachers.

Trust For Early Education Executive Director Amy Wilkins Praises President for Commitment to Early Literacy, Urges Support for Increased Teacher Qualifications
Amy Wilkins
WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 7, 2003) - The Trust for Early Education Executive Director Amy Wilkins released the following statement following the President’s remarks on the reauthorization of the Head Start “Today, the President made a strong commitment to early education in his first major public statement dedicated to this issue. We share the broad goals outlined in the President’s statement with respect to early childhood literacy. But the Administration’s proposals do not directly address the most important step toward making high quality pre-kindergarten available for all children: improving teacher quality. Research shows the single best way to help better prepare children for school is to ensure that each and every classroom is staffed by a teacher with a bachelor’s degree with specialized training in early education.
